Initial qualification and schedule

Before joining the therapeutic and research programme, in our clinic, magnetic resonance examination of the vascular system (angio-MRI) need to be perform to the patient according to a special protocol developed by Dr Schelling, as an extension of Prof. Haacke's protocol. The magnetic resonance of the head, spine and venous system with the administration of a contrasting agent takes about 1-1.5 hours. On its basis, the doctor assesses whether venous deformities have been observed in the patient and if so to what extent. The doctor decides whether the patient can join the Therapeutic and Research Programme.

Magnetic resonance of the venous system (angio-MRV) is performed in our clinic at an earlier date as a condition of initial qualification for the therapeutic and research programme.

Day 1 - Pre-surgical diagnostics and treatment procedure:

  • Registration of the patient in the clinic.
  • Laboratory tests.
  • Chest X-Ray (duration approx. 30 minutes ).
  • ECG (electrocardiogram of the heart) (duration approx. 30 minutes ).
  • Neurological examination to assess patient's medical condition (duration approx. 60 minutes ).
  • Pre-surgical consultation with the leading doctor in order to review performed tests (duration approx. 60 minutes ).
  • Discussion of the survey that describes the patient's medical condition for the period of last 2 months. The survey is completed and sent to us by the patient no later than 3 days before arrival at the clinic.
  • Phlebographic examination performed with IVUS intravascular ultrasound with an administration of a contrast agent and vein pressure measurements. If necessary, arteriography. Examinations and procedures are performed under general anaesthesia (narcosis).
  • Vascular angioplasty surgery performed with the use of a balloon.
  • After the surgery, the patient will remain in a lying position for at least 6 hours.
  • The patient remains in the clinic overnight.

Day 2 - Post-surgical diagnostics:

  • Post-surgical consultations.
  • Magnetic resonance of the head, spine and venous system (angio-MRI) with the administration of a contrasting agent (duration approx. 1-1.5 hours).
  • Neurological examination to assess patient's medical condition (duration approx. 1 hour).
  • Patient's discharge.

Additional information:

  • Travel by plane to the place of residence is possible not earlier than 48 hours after the procedure. This is due to medical safety issues and possible complications. The patient can stay at the clinic for another 24 hours at no extra charge or move to the hotel. Transport to the hotel will be provided.
  • Upon admission to the clinic, the patient will be asked to sign a informed consent for both non-invasive and invasive diagnostic and procedure, as well as consent for the anonymous use of data regarding the history of his or her condition, diagnostics and therapy in the research program run by the clinic.
  • After the procedure, it may be necessary to take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs at doses and times set individually for each patient.
  • On the day of discharge from the clinic, the patient will receive a medical report which describes the diagnosis and procedure performed.
  • The patient will be asked to take part in follow-up examinations six and twelve months after the surgery in order to provide reliable data on the effectiveness and safety of the therapy.
